$5 admission during Penguin Days through Feb.

African black-footed penguin

That’s right – through January and February the price of admission is dropping with the temps. Until Feb. 28, guests can visit the African penguins (and all the other animals) for just $5 per person. Children age 2 and younger and Dallas Zoo members are always free.

The special pricing is our way of thanking our incredible community for support throughout 2014. Even if it’s chilly, the lower admission offers a chance to enjoy the warmth of the nation’s most venomous Herpetarium, the creepy-crawlies of Bug U!, facts about great apes at the Jake L. Hamon Gorilla Conservation Research Station, and to hear the trumpeting of an elephant in the Simmons Safari Base Camp at the Giants of the Savanna.

Here’s 30 seconds of our 11 African black-footed penguins waddling, torpedoing and plunging their way through winter.

How to have a blast at Dollar Day

Dollar Day at the Dallas Zoo is our way of giving back to our amazing community, and we want you to get the most out of your visit! Here are a few tips to help you navigate your_MG_2964-Family walking-CB way through Dollar Day.

  • Get here early. We open at 9 a.m., but the lines form well before that.
  • Parking is limited! A great option is to take the DART Red Line right to our door.
  • Download our free Dallas Zoo app on iPhone or Android to help you find your way around. (The blinking map dot shows where you are and what animals are close!)
  • Check the schedule as soon as you arrive – we’ve added shows, and you can plan your day around the ones you don’t want to miss (Cheetah Encounter, SOAR bird show, keeper talks).
  • Decide which half of the zoo you want to visit first: Wilds of Africa (lions, giraffes, elephants, zebras, Gorilla Trail), or ZooNorth (Children’s Zoo, reptiles, koalas, tiger, monkeys).
  • Don’t miss our babies in the Wilds of Africa: giraffe, mandrill, chimp! Giraffe Kopano is scheduled to be in the North habitat Wednesday from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m., although it always depends on many factors.
  • Be nice! It’s going to be a beautiful day, and we’re all lucky to be able to spend it at one of the nation’s best zoos! Please be patient in lines and with your fellow guests, and share window space.
  • If you have a problem or question, please find a uniformed staffer and ask for help. We’ve staffed up to be sure you have a great time!

It’ll be sunny and 65 degrees Wednesday, so we expect big crowds and lots of excitement. We can’t wait to spend the day before Thanksgiving with you and your family!

Stormy Weather

That was quite a storm that blew through Dallas this afternoon.
Your Dallas Zoo will have a delayed opening of 11 a.m. Friday morning (October 3)  and will be offering $5 admission all day.
ZooStorm10.2.14Some areas of the zoo, like the Wilds of Africa Plaza, may be closed while we continue the debris cleanup.  We’ll get your Zoo back to normal as quickly as possible. The great news is, everyone is safe and sound.  Our staff worked quickly to shift animals indoors and to help guide guests to shelter. A big kudos to all of our staff, from zookeepers to Guests Services to our Facilities team. We couldn’t do it without you!

Dallas Zoo becomes a smoking-free park

Our new no-smoking policy follows our commitment to being a family-friendly park.

Our new no-smoking policy follows our commitment to being a family-friendly park.

We’re clearing the air in the Dallas Zoo. To eliminate secondhand smoke exposure for our guests, animals and staff, we will become a smoke-free park beginning Oct. 1, 2014.

The new policy includes cigarettes, pipes, cigars, and alternative smoking devices, such as e-cigarettes or “vaping.” Guests may smoke or use e-cigs only in designated areas outside of the main and south entry gates. Hand stamps will be provided to ensure easy re-entry. Signs throughout the park will notify guests of the new policy.

Smoking already had been restricted throughout much of the Zoo, including the Lacerte Family Children’s Zoo and other areas. Many outdoor parks and open-air venues have implemented similar policies, including more than two-thirds of zoos accredited by the Association of Zoos and Aquariums (AZA).

We realize that some guests will be inconvenienced by the change, but we appreciate your understanding and support as we improve the Zoo experience for all guests.

Monorail Safari remains closed for in-depth assessment

blg_MonorailWaterfallThe Monorail Safari will remain closed while the Dallas Zoo brings in outside experts to collaborate on a top-to-bottom evaluation of the popular people-mover, which serves more than 200,000 visitors each year.

The monorail halted Wednesday after an off-site voltage surge from an Oncor feeder line. The heat was not a factor, nor did the train malfunction; it’s designed to stop after a significant power event. The 48 passengers and the driver climbed down 12-foot ladders. The evaluation will explore why the train remained stopped after the power supply was restored and examine the overall electrical systems and components of the entire monorail.

“Our emergency plan worked exactly as it should have Wednesday during this unfortunate incident,” said Gregg Hudson, president and CEO of the Dallas Zoo. “However, as one of the nation’s leading zoos, we won’t rest until we get answers about anything that affects our visitors’ experience. This comprehensive evaluation will give us the information we need to decide about the monorail moving forward.”

The zoo has reached out to several firms specializing in public conveyances and anticipates having a contract signed next week. The evaluation is expected to take several weeks.

Zoo members may exchange their monorail coupons for free rides on the Safari Express mini-train on Picnic Ridge.

The Monorail Safari includes three low-speed electric trains, each with 13 cars that move at 3 mph. It runs on a one-mile loop around the back side of the 106-acre zoo, allowing visitors to see six habitats not accessible by foot: mountain, woodlands, river, arid, semi-arid and bush. It also circles above the Chimpanzee Forest, Nile crocodile pond and Penguin Cove. It’s one of just a few in the nation that goes uphill and downhill; the inclines are necessary because the Dallas Zoo sits on a hilly, heartland prairie forest.

The 24-year-old monorail has been upgraded through the years with updated components, including the electrical system and the 12 motors that propel each train. These efforts have extended the monorail’s lifespan significantly. Repairs and updates are performed by the zoo’s experienced eight-member team of mechanical and electrical experts, which also works with outside consultants as needed.

“Our monorail team is experienced and creative,” Hudson said. “Most have been working with this train for more than a decade, so they’ve very familiar with it. Their hard work is the reason why millions of visitors have been able to experience the Monorail Safari over the past 24 years. We are willing to do whatever it takes to ensure that our guests are not inconvenienced by another unexpected stoppage.”
